Avoid running electrical cords beneath area rugs or carpeting in your home. Some homeowners do this to hide the appearance of a lamp cord or extension cord, but it’s a dangerous practice. No electrical cord should ever be routed under carpeting—foot traffic, the weight of furniture, or even pets chewing on the cord can damage the insulation. Once the insulation is compromised, the exposed electrical current can create a serious fire hazard.

The proper solution is to have a UL-listed floor receptacle installed where power is needed, rather than running cords across the floor to reach the desired area.
